Are Butcher Box Boxes Worth the Price?

Browsing Facebook today I saw an ad for Butcher Box, a company that will package high quality meat and ship it to your door. I was interested in the concept and visited the website to learn a little more.

Looking further I saw that the price was $129 dollars per month for the All Beef Box(they have other options). The All Beef box had the following in a recent box.

•  Ground Beef Bricks – 2 X 1 lbs(2 lbs)
• * Tri-Tip steak – 2 x 12 oz(24 oz total)
• * Ribeye steak – 2 x 10 oz(20 oz total)
• * Flank Steaks – 1 x 16 oz(16 oz)
• * Sirloin Tips – 1 x 16 oz(16 oz)

Now according to their website, they source only 100% Grass feed beef, free from antibiotics so I will not compare the meat to cheap cuts or other non-organic choices when possible. I will use HEB as the local grocery store comparison.

• * H-E-B Natural Grass Fed Beef Ground Beef – $7.49 per pound at 2 pounds = $14.98
• * Tri Tip Steak – $5.49 lb = 24 oz total in Butcher box – ($5.49/2 = $2.75) so $2.75 + $5.49 = $8.24
• * H-E-B Prime 1 Boneless Ribeye Steak – $15.97 lb and 20 oz total in box = $15.97/16 = 0.998125 per ounce, 15.97 + (0.99812 5 X 4) = $19.96
• * H‑E‑B Natural Choice Flank Steak – $9.97 lb
• * USDA Select Sirloin Tip Steak – $4.87 lb

So the price of all the meat purchased from H-E-B is
$14.98 + $8.24 + $19.96 + $9.97 + $4.87 = $58.02

Now with the total we can compare the cost of the All Beef Butcher Box minus the cost of store bought meat.

$129.00 – $58.01 = $70.98 difference in price.

After looking at the results, it is probably best to go to the grocery store to purchase your meat.
