Back in 2012 I was lucky enough to have the experience of doing a study abroad semester at the University of Technology in Sydney Australia(UTS). I loved my time there and really gained a deep appreciation for the people and culture of Australia. They are such a fun loving unpretentious group that I personally admire.
I don’t recall the food of Australia as being anything special. That isn’t to say that things were bad but I don’t recall anything blowing me away. However I appreciated the unpretentious aspect of their culture. At a BBQ you eat hot dog with onions on a piece of white bread.
Now I had my fair share of meat pies while I was in Australia and they were all quite good. It is more fun to cook a national dish when I have tasted the original. After checking out the original recipe, I knew I could swap out extra lean stew beef for ground beef and add a package of mushrooms and the recipe would still be authentic.
Overall pretty easy to make, just combine beef, onion, and mushrooms and brown them. Once browned add the seasonings, sauces, and water and cook and reduce. Let cool then fill up a puff pastry pie filling and throw in the oven. Just be aware the recipe states Celsius units so do some converting before you cook.
Recipe is available here. Remember I swapped out extra lean stew beef for the ground beef and added a package of mushrooms.
