Growing your own herbs and spices is fun. However there is a distinct reality between buying the seed packet and then later ending up with a planter full of Spearmint.
Making tea is a great option to use up some Spearmint!
Cold Spearmint Tea
This is a little more challenging than making hot tea but perfect for hot summer days(As in most of the year in Austin).
There are only two things needed besides Spearmint:
- A Pitcher
- Cheesecloth
Start by plucking the leaves and clean thoroughly. Bugs like to eat away at the leaves and nobody wants bug tea.
Once your leaves are rinsed, simply wrap them up in cheesecloth and tie a knot. Place in the pitcher and soon you will be having cool spearmint tea. You know that it is working if the water gets cloudier over time.
Hot Spearmint Tea
This is super easy to make as well, they only thing needed that you might not have on hand is a loose leaf tea infuser.
You start by plucking and cleaning your tea leaves, stuff in the strainer, then boil on the stovetop.
The amazing thing about this method is the beautiful green color that leaches from the leaves.
Serve with a side of dessert and voila, you are using up some of the spearmint!
