Tortilla Española (Spain)

Sometimes it can be pricey making national dishes. Exotic ingredients that you will use only once, choice cuts of meat, the list goes on. Tortilla Española bucks that trend as it is very cheap to make costing me around ten dollars.

  • 1 ¼ pounds onions, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 ½ pounds russet potatoes
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 4 cups extra-virgin olive oil
  • 10 large eggs

I can guarantee most of you already have those ingredients at the house already. The recipe called for a green pepper to be added but I left that out as I found that was not authentic(certainly wouldn’t be a bad addition).

The instructions leave a lot to be desired but here is the generally gist of how to make this. Chop up your potatoes, onions, and garlic then add them to your skillet(I used my cast-iron for this). Cook until potatoes are soft and then add the beaten eggs to the skillet. Gently lift the mixture up, allowing the egg to set and once a solid base is formed, flip using a plate or pan.

The meal was delicious, hearty and simple but very filing. I also had some jamón serrano(a type of cured ham) and some Spanish wine to enjoy with it. If you are looking for a cheap but delicious meal look no further.
